The Coding Specialist II, under the supervision of the Coding Supervisor, ED, OP Surgery & Observation, analyzes and interprets clinical documentation to accurately code and abstract data for ED, OP Surgery, and Observation records. The Coding Specialist II will also be responsible for using revenue management software to identify and resolve coding and claim edits. Utilizing a computerized encoder and multiple databases, abstracts data from clinical documentation in the electronic health record, and assigns classification codes in accordance with Federal, State, and organizational guidelines. Queries physicians as needed, to clarify documentation and ensure accurate code assignment, and support all uses of coded data. Organizes and prioritizes work to meet deadlines and goals. Maintains and expands knowledge of coding and sequencing guidelines to ensure coding compliance and accuracy.
Education/Experience/Certification Track 1: High school diploma or GED and CCS required. Requires a minimum of 2 years' experience coding ED, Outpatient surgery and/or Observation records.
Education/Experience/Certification Track 2: RHIT required. A minimum of 2 years' experience coding ED, Outpatient Surgery and/or Observation records is preferred.
Education/Experience/Certification Track 3: High school Diploma or GED required. Requires a minimum of 5 years of experience coding ED, Outpatient Surgery and/or Observation records. Must obtain CCS credential within 6 months of hire.Knowledge:
Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of current coding classification systems, concepts, practices, compliance, and policies related to outpatient coding and accurately assigns codes as governed by state and federal regulations.
Skills: Completion of OP Surgery, ED, and Observation Diagnosis and CPT Coding assessment with a minimum of 75% accuracy.Required Licensure Certification, etc.:
If qualifying under Track 1, a minimum of an AHIMA credential of CCS is required upon hire.
If qualifying under Track 2, a minimum of an AHIMA credential of RHIT is required upon hire.
If qualifying under Track 3, must obtain the AHIMA credential of CCS within 6 months of hire.Work Experience:
