Job Description

Software Methods is seeking a Junior System Administrator for a contract to hire opportunity in the Philadelphia, PA area. This is a 100% remote work from home opportunity with occasional visits to local data centers in Philadelphia and King of Prussia.

The hours of support are from 9:00am to 5:00pm EST Monday through Friday with occasional off hours work when IT maintenance is required. The ideal candidate will be part of a team of administrators alternating weekend on-call support.

You will join a dedicated, professional Administration team responsible for network reliability engineering. This position is responsible for monitoring, managing, operating, deploying, and continuously improving network devices as well as associated infrastructure in a 24/7 environment.

System Administrators work with cross-functional teams that include IT, operational staff, external vendors, third parties, and business partners to address issues across the ecosystem. As part of the Administration team, you will work with limited supervision and direction while executing associated functions and responsibilities.


  • Install programs, software, and hardware
  • Install, configure, and maintain network services, equipment, and devices
  • Support and administer servers and server environments
  • Manage all system back-up and restore protocol. Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes, or disks. When system backups are created, media is recycled and sent off site as necessary
  • Perform regular file archival and purge as necessary
  • Perform troubleshooting analysis of servers, workstations, and associated systems
  • Monitor system performance and perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups
  • Manage user accounts, permissions, email, anti-virus, and anti-spam
  • Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions
  • Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure/add new services as necessary
  • Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures
  • Provide 24/7 on call support to users and company leadership
  • Respond physically to trouble situations, within the local facility, and conduct troubleshooting as required
  • Document issues, lessons learned, and best practices.


  • Cisco, Microsoft, SQL, BMC products (Certifications in any or all competencies a plus)
  • Bachelor s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or equivalent preferred but relevant work experience considered
  • Windows, Cisco Systems, UNIX, and Linux
  • Switches, Routers, Hubs, Servers, Cables, Racks, Firewalls, LAN, WAN, TCP/IP, DNS, UDP, Latency, VoIP, QoS, EIGRP, BGP, OSPF, NHRP, ATM, and PPP
  • 3 - 5 years system administration experience
  • Ability to support systems, infrastructure, and users 24/7
  • Previous experience in a technical support role maintaining high service levels in a demanding environment.
