I’ve been using Splunk as a resource to change the Security Landscape of A Global Enterprise’s vulnerability.
Initially, Splunk was on a windows platform where Rapid7, Symantec, Palo Alto, Cisco were all integrated data sets that were correlated to show a clear picture of the security posture.
I was able to capture the Power User certification in Splunk which allowed me to lead my team by example of developing in Splunk each day.
The organization that I was working for as the end client needs a lot of help in the area of vulnerability management and with the Splunk Rapid7 app, I integrated the application and installed the agents on the correct servers to be able to receive the data of scans that were scheduled for each weekend to begin after business hours on Friday and to run throughout the weekend.
There were a lot prebuilt tables and charts that were missing information that I had to go in and configure so that the information could be populated or replaced with more relevant information.
Custom tables were created along with custom charting to show the trends of vulnerabilities and custom priorities were set based on the organizations needs to protect against threats that were known to be used in the wild to exploit.
Another application that was configured in Splunk was Palo Alto where all of the firewall traffic was analyzed and correlated, I was able to show which attacks were happening most frequently and able to show what areas we needed to focus on protecting if exposed.
Thresholds were created to send alerts if malware on machines reach a certain level. This allowed for real time input and decision that were vital to helping the CISO protect the entire enterprise.
The Cisco data was ingested and on the L2 level of the organization’s manufacturing facilities, I was able to write the script to pull the data into Splunk and analyze if a manufacturing facilities ACL was in ENFORCE mode or OBSERVE mode.
This was most helpful because with a lookup table accessing the data of each switch I was able to show if an organization was able to save time of logging into each switch and reading each ACL manually and printing each ACL.
It was easy to see what traffic was being denied and allowed. Those sites that were in OBSERVE mode needed to transition over to ENFORCE as this application created in Splunk allowed for the ACL traffic to be analyzed in real time which was helpful in working with the manufacturing facilities to troubleshoot any outages that were cause by the ACL which is crucial to the plant’s uptime.
Splunk was integrated into ServiceNow where tickets were automatically created when Symantec detected new viruses, MPLS went offline, pix alerts reached a certain level, thresholds triggered on malware, wildfire alerts found, honeypot DNS sinkhole violated, a device plugged in at the plant.
