Pizza Party Planning Service for Remoters
In what is truly a sign of the popularity of remote work, a digital agency called Planetary has launched a new service called Pizzatime to arrange virtual pizza parties for companies with far-flung employees. The service will ask for a date and the expected number of attendees for the remote meeting. It will then provide an order link to share with attendees, so everyone can choose their own “personal-sized” pizza. After orders are taken, Pizzatime will coordinate delivery to each location. The participants will then get a calendar invite with a Zoom video link to join the virtual pizza party.
Gig Economy Site Raises $11 Million
Founded by Zack Smith and Corey Bober, Jobble is an on-demand marketplace and management platform that connects 60 million gig economy workers in the United States seeking jobs with companies offering flexible work opportunities. As one of the largest on-demand platforms in the U.S., Jobble has filled jobs in more than 1,600 cities across all 50 states.
Proceeds from the round will be used to expand Jobble’s development team to enhance the platform’s user experience. In addition, the Company will be building out its sales and marketing efforts to significantly expand its national footprint, with the potential to expand internationally. FULL STORY
Remote Work Has Grown 159% since '05
Technological advancements over the past decade brought an influx of telecommunicating abilities, making remote work the new norm for businesses, according to a Tuesday report from Global Workplace Analytics and FlexJobs. The number of Americans participating in remote work has jumped by 159% between 2005 and 2017, the report found.
Based on US government data from the US Census, the report revealed how popular remote work has become over the past decade. The report defined remote workers, or telecommuters, as "non-self-employed people who principally work from home at least half-time." Over the past 10 years, the number of these workers grew by 91%. Studies Show Letting Employees Have Flew Work Amounts to Greater Productivity
Companies that let their workers decide where and when to do their jobs—whether in another city or in the middle of the night—increase employee productivity, reduce turnover, and lower organizational costs, new research suggests.
As some companies move to adopt broader telecommute policies, others such as Yahoo! have publicly retreated from allowing workers to perform their jobs away from headquarters. Companies have cited the need for office “face time” and the benefits of spontaneous interaction among reasons to avoid remote work, even for highly skilled, autonomous employees. To Choudhury, a deeper factor might underlie their reluctance.
